Biography: Sara J. "Sam" Little, 68, of Littlestown, died Thursday, June 18, at her home.  She was the wife of Jon F. Little for 46 years. Born June 8, 1952 in Jeannette, she was the daughter of the late Albert & Sara (Zatazelo) Wallace.  Sam was a 1970 Jeannette High School graduate and obtained her B.S. from IUP.  She was an art teacher retiring from Hanover High School after 38 years, during which time she was named PA Secondary Educator of the Year and was also given the Teacher Impact Award from WGAL. Last year, Sam founded the The Little Art Bank in Hanover and realized her lifelong dream of having a center for the arts for people of all ages and abilities.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her son, Nathan Little of Littlestown and her daughter, Lauren Little of Reading; her brothers, Albert Wallace, William Wallace and Kenny Wallace and her sisters, Millie Cramer, Patty Haggerty and Kathy Mentch, all of Western PA.  Sam was predeceased by her sister, Janet Dinger.

If you knew Sam, you know she was always dressed to the nines in her own style.  She had a sense of humor and a distinctive laugh. She loved her family and all her students deeply and was always there to help or listen and make a difference in so many lives. Her family is thankful they got to spend time together last year on a trip to Europe and will always cherish those memories.

Due to COVID-19, a memorial service will be announced at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to:  The Little Art Bank, 241 N. Franklin St., Hanover, PA 17331 to help continue Sam’s mission of using art to heal and improve lives.  Online condolences may be shared on www.littlesfh.com.

I was a student of Sara's at Hanover High School in the early 90's. She was a major influence in my life and I am deeply saddened to learn of her passing. She was one of the kindest souls I had ever met. I am extremely lucky to have known her as both a teacher and mentor. She always treated me like an adult. I appreciated her encouragement and wisdom, and of course her indelible laugh. It was through her tutelage and guidance that I found myself as an artist and developed a portfolio worthy of a large scholarship to a reputable art college.

Sara not only understood the importance and power of art, she saw potential in everyone to be creative and to use their creativity to better their lives. She was a singular personality who I will always remember fondly. My deepest and sincerest condolences to Jon, Nathan, and Lauren, to Sara's family and friends, to her students and cohorts, and to all who had the pleasure to know her and be touched by her graceful spirit. May her star shine forever.

It's been almost a month since Sam's passing. This loss has been unreal to my sister, my classmates and myself. Sam was an amazing person and one that will never be replaced. She was so full of joy and had a true commitment to the people that she encouraged through art everyday. She took my sister under her wing and taught her how to create, laugh and love while spending time in our class. The LAB was her ultimate goal that she opened to our community for people from all walks of life. She found joy and such satisfaction through her students and everyone around her. Her legacy will live on through the Art Bank and all the many lives that she touched. Thank you Sam for all that you did and all that you gave with your whole heart. You will be forever loved and missed.

I am beyond shocked. I had just spoke to Sam a few months ago about my children Benedicte and Djino coming to classes. They had taken classes with her in Hanover throughout the years and loved her. My daughter's art skills really came into view through her help. I am so sorry. I know she was so excited about this new venture. Prayers to all experiencing this huge loss.

The world has lost a beautiful soul. I was shocked and saddened upon the news. My condolences to all her family. Sam was the biggest champion of students I knew. We worked together on setting up the revolving display of Hanover student art on in the Eichelberger Professional Building. At the dedication, her students revealed their only reason for remaining to graduation was because of Mrs. Little. They found success, creativity and a reason bigger than the 3 Rs to stay in school. She touched the lives of thousands of students, parents and locals with her love, drive to express oneself through art, constant new ideas and infectious laugh. She brought joy to my life for the 25 years I knew her. Let's all make sure of her continued legacy by contributing to The Little Art Bank.

Mrs. Little was my art teacher from kindergarten through fifth grade, and grades 9-12. I spent a lot of time in her classroom, even when I didn't have class with her. I admired her energy and dedication to her career and students.
Her passing comes as a shock to me. I ran into her out in public just before the art lab opened, and she invited me over to come check it out. We chatted for a while, and then it was time for her to get back to work on the lab. My deepest condolences go out to her family.

I had only just met this dedicated, talented, remarkable woman. I was so looking forward to traveling to Hanover to see her dream come true with her Art lab. We had much in common and I was so excited to share ideas and inspirations with her. This is such a deep loss as she made the world a better place with her presence, her generosity, and a life well lived. I remember grade school art classes with Mrs. Little at Hanover Elementary in the late 70’s and early 80’s. She was always so colorfully dressed and had patience with kids like me who exhibited minimal artistic talent. She was part of a wonderful group of teachers there during my years, and I remember that she enthusiastically loved what she did. My sincere condolences to her family.
