Robert G. Johnson

Jan 30th, 2016

Biography:

Robert G. Johnson, 84, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016, following a short illness. He is survived by Annie N. (Pinkard) Johnson, his beloved wife of 64 years, of Littlestown, PA, and their three daughters, Patty Cooper (John, deceased) of Poolesville, MD, Cheri Lanier (Mark) of Tybee Island, GA, Sue Farran of Westminster, MD, and son, Andy Johnson (Carrie) of Poolesville, MD. He was a proud and loving grandfather and great-grandfather.

Robert was born in Washington, D.C. in 1931 to Randolph L. and Mary V. Johnson, the youngest of four children. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Marvin E. Johnson, Bernie L. Johnson, and sister, Doris M. Hubbell. After graduating Eastern High School in the District, he served in the Marine Corps from 1949-52. He married Annie Pinkard in February 1951 at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Southwest Washington, D.C. Soon after, they moved to Rockville, MD, where they raised their family and lived until both Robert and Annie retired. In 1992, they moved to Littlestown, PA.

Early in his professional career, Robert worked at the Washington Gas Light Company, while also attending Southeastern University in the District. He graduated with a degree in accounting and began his lengthy career in federal service with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. He was subsequently employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture before taking a job with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, where he spent a majority of his career as a personnel manager.

Robert had a broad smile, a disarming wit, and a robust head of hair that was envied by all. He was a life-long fan of Notre Dame football and a youth boxer of some distinction. He preferred to talk about the accomplishments of others than his own. The voluminous catalogue of photographs and home movies he compiled over six decades is a testament to his love for his family. He was intelligent, well-read and a wonderful writer. Above all, Robert was a caring and devoted husband to Annie, who he adored. Together, they travelled often and were active in local community activities.

Services will be held Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 11a.m. at Saint Aloysius Catholic Church, 29 South Queen Street, Littlestown, PA, 17340, followed by interment of his ashes in the church cemetery.
